General Education Committee Report to Faculty Senate
November 6, 2009
The General Education Committee met on October 16, 2009 at 10:00 a.m.

Also in attendance: Kelly Ching
Approved Courses:
Math 241 - Foundations, Symbolic Reasoning

Additional Issues:
We currently do not require the General Education Oral or Ethics focus for graduation from UHWO. We need at least 3 O and E courses offered every semester to insure that all students have the ability to complete these requirements before graduation. We are asking all faculty who include oral or ethics components in their courses to consider applying for the O or E focus designation.
Next meeting: November 20, 2009
Deadline for proposals: November 13. Please email proposals to Fenny Cox and place the original signed proposal in her mailbox. Proposal forms can be found on the FS website.

May 1, 2009
The General Education Committee met on Apri 17, 2009 at 10:00 a.m.
Members in attendance: Julia Myers, Michael Hallstone, Alan Rosenfeld, Jim Turner, Linda Randall
Others in attendance: Terri Ota & Susan Nishida
Updates:
- The Committee is continuing work on identifying gaps in GE course offerings at UHWO. Terri Ota presented results of a survey of existing focus courses, and the number of transfer and returning students needing focus courses. The committee also discussed the possibility of unfreezing the hold on focus requirements (H, O, and E) at UHWO. The consensus was that there are currently not enough focus courses to meet the needs of our students, should the freeze be lifted. The committee recommends maintaining the freeze on all focus areas until Fall of 2010.
- The Multicampus Foundations Board met on Monday, April 27th. Fenny Cox represented UHWO. The Foundations Board voted to accept UHWO's proposal to join the Board.
Approved Courses:
EDEE 492 was approved for the E Focus
Next meeting: This was the final meeting for AY 2008-2009. The committee will reconvene in September.

General Education Committee Report to Faculty Senate
February 6, 2009
The General Education Committee met on January 23, 2009 at 10:00 a.m.
Members in attendance were: Ross Cordy, Alan Rosenfeld , Michael Hallstone, Fenny Cox, Jim Turner, Margot, Saili Lilomaiava-Doktor, Julia Myers, June Aono, Linda Randall
- The Committee is reviewing the distribution of General Education courses at UHWO, and considering actions/recommendations to ensure that there is an adequate distribution of foundations, diversification and focus courses. An example of an identified gap is that there are no Oral Communication (O) courses at the lower division at UHWO.
- The HAP subcommittee voted on and approved HPST 202 (Pacific Worlds: Introduction to Pacific Island Studies) as a H focus class.
- On January 23rd, the UH System HAP Board delegates met and approved UHWO's program in line with the UH System H Focus Articulation Agreement. Therefore, UHWO is officially approved and a member of the UH System HAP Board. What this means is that effective this semester, all our HAP courses automatically transfer to other campuses.
Next meeting: February 20th
Deadline for proposals: February 13th
General Education Committee Report to Faculty Senate
December 5, 2008
The General Education Committee met on November 21, 2008 at 10:00 a.m.
Members in attendance: Julia Myers, Ross Cordy, Fenny Cox, June Aono, Sa'ili Lilomaiava-Doktor, Alan Rosenfeld, Linda Randall
Updates: The General Education Committee discussed the following issues:
- Recommendations for what General Education forms and information need to be included on the webpage for the UHWO Faculty Handbook. The committee made the decision to include the General Education Requirements (one pager with a link to hallmarks) and the proposal forms.
- Progress on system-wide foundations articulation agreement. The proposal for this was initiated last year, and was sent back to us for some revisions. Julia will meet with Jayson Chun (the previous committee chair) to determine what still needs to be done.
- Future plans for General Education Committee. A few things the committee will pursue are:
- Creating a central repository for approved forms.
- Updating proposal forms (to include examples of ideal responses), and digitizing these forms.
- Providing workshops for those who would like help understanding General Education Requirements at UHWO, and with submitting proposal forms.
- Analyzing the number of lower level and upper level focus courses. We want to insure that there are no situations where students' progression is delayed due to the lack of focus courses. The first step is getting an inventory of all of these courses from Terri Ota.
- Communicating with the Writing Intensive committee about representation on the General Education Committee, or at least about providing the committee with reports about what is voted on and approved, since Writing Intensive falls under General Education. A similar process is used for Hawaiian Asian Pacific, where the HAP committee handles HAP issues/proposals separately, but reports their decisions to the General Education Committee.
Approved Courses:
PUBA 477 for E focus
Next meeting: January 23rd
Deadline for proposals: January 16th
